Hummingbirds: How To Attract Them To Your Garden

Imagine the pleasure of sitting in your garden in the evening, with butterflies fluttering around, and hummingbirds sipping the nectar from your flowers. What a beautiful sight! But if you want to achieve this beauty in your garden, you need to take some measures to ensure that the butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to it.

It is the surroundings and the plants in your garden that attract the butterflies and hummingbirds to it. If you do not create sufficient interest for them in the plants you grow in your garden, then they may not visit you.

There are certain types of plant which are more likely to attract butterflies and hummingbirds to them, because of the nectar in them which the creatures like to sip.

So you need to select the plants which the butterflies and hummingbirds prefer, when you are choosing what to plant in your garden. There is usually a great variety of flowers and shrubs which they will be attracted to, so you need to think of lots of varied plants to include in your garden beds.

When you are choosing the plants and flowers for your garden, you need to consider, of course, the region where you live. You need to consider also, for example, the availability of light and air in the places where the plants are going to grow.

If you live in zones 2 to 8, then you will be able to grow the Red Columbine. This flower is attractive to hummingbirds, who like their red color. As well as being highly attractive to hummingbirds, they are also beautiful flowers. Another feature of this plant is that it flowers early in the season.

If you want tall plants in your garden, and you live in zones 2 to 9, then you could consider planting the Delphinium. This is a plant which flowers in various colors and can reach up to five feet in height.

Other plants which you might like to consider include the following:

Marigolds, which butterflies like because of the large quantity of nectar that they contain. They are also cheaply priced plants and you can therefore plant them in profusion in your garden.

Lots of butterflies will be attracted by the butterfly bush. These are very tall growing bushes, and will attract hummingbirds as well as butterflies.

Hummingbirds and butterflies will also be attracted by sunflowers, which they like for their nectar and seeds.

Canada Thistle and Rabbit Brush are especially attractive to monarch butterflies. Lilacs and geraniums, on the other hand, are likely to attract Swallowtails. Various different butterflies are attracted to Gray Hairstreak plants and daisies.

Another thing you should do if you want to attract birds of any type to your garden is to provide them with a supply of water. In general, the environment in your garden should be colorful and healthy, and you will attract both butterflies and hummingbirds.
