Hummingbirds: Bird Houses

A great addition to your garden would be a bird house, which is suitably placed to attract large numbers of birds into the garden. This would be a great sight for you to enjoy. Most people who enjoy gardens and gardening love to have birds around, and many of them have different designs of bird house which they put up in the garden. The different designs mean that they can watch various types of birds. Hummingbirds, which normally live in South America, are particularly great birds to watch.

Hummingbirds are the smallest and also the most energetic birds in the world, and to fuel this energy they need to consume lots of nectar. These characteristics make them a very desirable bird to have visit your garden, and in fact they are one of the most popular types of bird to watch.

There are various techniques which people use to attract hummingbirds to their garden. If you want to be able to watch them for long periods of time, then you need to build a place for them which will keep them there for a while.

One good idea is to build a special hummingbird house, built specifically to appeal to the hummingbirds' tastes.

Putting up a house for hummingbirds doesn't have to be a lot of work. Hummingbirds are small and therefore do not need a big house, so a small, simple structure will be quite sufficient. Even a simple structure made from small tins, boxes or small pieces of wood would work.

Whatever kind of house you build you need to be sure that it will be safe and secure. You also should ensure that larger birds do not crash it, as it is only big enough for little hummingbirds.

In order to stop the larger birds from trying to use it, you should make the door opening just big enough for a hummingbird to get in, but not large enough for other types of bird. The house should also be placed so as to be away from the danger of other animals such as dogs and cats.

When you have made the house you can put it up on a tree, near the trunk, or somewhere near a tree. The houses are quite small and this means that once in place they will not be very noticeable.

Other places where you could put your hummingbird house include near tall plants, near the roof, and other places in your backyard. The main thing is to be sure that it is out of reach of other pets, especially cats.

Hummingbird houses are best placed in close proximity to flowering plants, because these plants will attract hummingbirds to them. These birds are most attracted by flowers which are red in color, and other flowers which produce nectar. Honeysuckle and trumpet vine are good plants to have growing in your garden for this reason.
